SOMERSET, NJ - The nonprofit SALT Foundation will be providing the public with free bags of healthy food in their fight against hunger on Sunday, March 14, 2021 at University Heights Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 37 Matilda Ave., Somerset, NJ 08873 from 1 PM until all the food is distributed.

Individuals and families can drive through and receive fresh fruit, vegetables, grains and other perishable food donated to SALT Foundation by Trader Joe’s in Hoboken and Brick, and Wegman’s in Princeton.

“With so many having struggled to make it through an incredibly challenging winter, I hope that one lesson we can all take from Women’s History Month is the inspiration to support each other through our most difficult times with compassion,” said Claudia Wheeler, SALT Foundation founder. “Healthy food addresses some of our most critical physical needs, and it is equally important to address our community’s social needs by serving one another in love.”

SALT Foundation has previously held 27 other drive-through, drop-off and hand-out food sharing events, as well as food distribution in Somerset, New Brunswick, Trenton, Jersey City, Union City, Teaneck, Hoboken, and Howell, distributing over 4,600 bags of food to local residents and families.

SALT Foundation gathers healthy and quality food that would otherwise be thrown away from these generous grocery stores, and then distributes that food to homeless shelters, food pantries, soup kitchens, women’s shelters, community groups, churches, community fridges, and special events like this one.

Over the past decade, Wheeler has collected and delivered over 140,000 pounds of fruits, vegetables, grains, and other food products to dozens of organizations and thousands of families, driving over 111,000 miles in the process. Wheeler is also a United States Navy veteran and a public schoolteacher.
