Nonprofit group and 'Chopped' winner's restaurant team up to help those in need

The Freetown Road Project restaurant in Jersey City and nonprofit SALT Foundation held a food and clothing giveaway for the homeless and those in need Sunday.

The Freetown Road Project restaurant in Jersey City and nonprofit SALT Foundation held a food and clothing giveaway for the homeless and those in need Sunday.

Volunteers at the Newark Avenue eatery gave away pre-packed shopping bags filled with a range of fruits, vegetables, breads and other food, as well as a limited supply of clothing at the event, which was the second for the restaurant and nonprofit.

Freetown Road Project head chef — and Food Network’s “Chopped” winner — Claude Lewis also served hot soup and a warm drink to those in need .

“Seeing volunteers joining us to give back to families and individuals in need is heart-warming for all of us, and speaks to the tremendous community spirit that defines Jersey City,” said Claudia Wheeler, SALT Foundation founder.
